The School of Art and Design has events throughout the year including the Annual Iron Pour, the Glass Pumpkin Patch, the C4 Juried Art Exhibition, Empty Bowls Charity Fundraiser, the SIMMS Conference, the Rickert-Ziebold Exhibition and Awards Ceremony, Design Days, Love at the Glove, the Holiday Sale, Art Education's Chalkolypse and Conference, Undergraduate and Graduate Thesis Exhibitions and much more.
Each fall SIU sculpture present their Annual Iron Pour and Casting Invitational Exhibition. The event takes place at the Art Foundry Complex at 1520-1560 West Pleasant Hill Rd.
The glass pumpkin sale is hosted by Southern Glass Works, the glass art student organization in the School of Art and Design at SIU, and directly supports the students and their work. Proceeds fund programs including the Visiting Scholar/Artist-in-Residence Program, Visiting Artist Series, field trips and conference trips that enhance the students’ educational experiences. Proceeds from the event have also been the main funding for building glass melting furnaces and other major glassblowing equipment.
Empty Bowls is an event where art meets hunger, compassion and advocacy; where talented SIU Ceramics students offer their handmade bowls to raise funds for those in need in the community.
Each Spring, over four hundred regional high school students participate in this Art Education program chalk art competition. Students are invited to create chalk artworks in response to thematic prompts, and wonderful large-scale artworks emerge on the sidewalk in Faner Mall and remain in place as long as the weather cooperates. The viewing is free and open to the public.
Every spring, the School of Art and Design proudly presents the annual Rickert-Ziebold Trust Awards. This award, established in the late Joseph Rickert's family in his memory, supports and encourages his tradition of excellence. Through their vision, love of art, and confidence in the future, the School of Art and Design honours our outstanding graduating seniors and prizes are awarded to a select few. These winners are announced at an awards ceremony at the exhibition's opening.
